The Environment is a Winner
Commenting on the award, the judges said: "This project had clear environmental benefit to the facility and the community. Particular care was taken to minimise negative impact on the environment, and to maximise the use of sustainable materials.
Fleet Pond is Hampshire’s largest fresh water lake with a SSSI status. Extremely shallow water had caused the lake to deteriorate, prompting the need for action.
The project achieved engineering excellence through improved water quality, the increased presence of wildlife and real stakeholder engagement and partnering. Under ownership of Hart District Council a masterplan developed with Environmental Consultants, Johns Associates has succeeded with the transformation. The restoration has taken years of planning and support through Natural England, the Environment Agency, the Fleet Pond Society and their Patron Chris Packham.
The works comprised access improvements, the creation of new habitat islands using the sediment removed from the lake, which at 22 hectares could not be drained down, requiring a sensitive approach and the use of specialist plant and floating equipment
At tender stage WM Longreach were selected, after proposing an innovative solution which reduced construction time and improved the safety of installation.
