Upper Furnace Pool Restoration in Ironbridge Gorge

Having worked on the original restoration back in 2005, the scope of works on WM Longreach’s return included: draining down the pool by removing the existing sluice boards using floating plant and a small long reach excavator at the outfall; removal of silt from the pool with a long reach excavator and clearing a channel under the railway arch to enable water to flow from the main pool to the outfall. The silt removed was placed in a bund created with Nicospan and posts driven into the ground in an area cleared of weeds and rushes. Given the proximity of an important railway structure careful measures were taken to avoid collision or damage. Good communication with local residents through letter drops and engagement with a local community group on a weekly basis kept the public, who regularly use walking routes around the site, informed.
