Dam Crest Raising at Grade II listed Park

Part of Capability Brown’s first commission the 6.5 hectare historic lake lies to the south west of Berrington Hall. It was formed from a tributary of the River Lugg and also fed by springs. The lake was created in the late 18th Century by the construction of dam which impounded the stream and channelled it underground. Inspections of this dam under the Reservoir Act noted that the level on one side had to be increased. Work included stripping off vegetation on the existing dam crest, forming a stone path to increase the crest level and finish with topsoil and then re-seeding. The section at the boathouse end was done using puddle clay to an average height of 400mm and a stone path constructed and the area topsoiled and seeded. With careful planning and creating a defined work area, disruption to public footways (critical to the client) was kept to a minimum and a stringent timescale saw timely completion.
