River Avon Fish Refuge

Working with the Environment Agency this project greatly improved fish spawning areas with the construction of a new fish refuge area in an existing natural depression adjacent to the River Avon. WM Longreach assisted with specialist excavations and re-profiling works.

The project located near the village of Wasperton, Warwickshire, involved the creation of a fish refuge by providing sheltered deep water feeding off the river and a fish friendly habitat for juvenile fish and macro invertebrates to grow.  As well as creating enhanced floodwater storage, woody debris (root plates) were anchored within the fry refuge. Specialist permits ensured these sensitive works also considered the adjacent valuable marsh area.
