ICE South East Award 2013

Fleet Pond: Winner of 2013 ICE South East Environmental Sustainability Award

The Fleet Pond project took over 25 years to come to fruition after the efforts of the Fleet Pond Society and multiple stakeholders.  WM Longreach got involved to ensure the delivery of the project, developing a safe and affordable solution.  Having identified access had to be gained by using floating equipment, our installation methods reduced time in the water and maximised safety.

Working with Hart District Council, Natural England and stakeholders (Fleet Pond Society of which Chris Packham was patron) WM Longreach improved water quality, habitats and ecology by removing silt, building lake islands and creating wildlife habitats.

The works were phased to meet the delicate needs of the wildlife such as avoiding the bird breeding season.  Savings were made both at tender stage and because works finished ahead of schedule due to using an innovative approach.  This involved using a simple-to-install retaining structure based on a proprietary system (a pontoon based long reach excavator installing nicospan barriers to contain the dredged silt, thus creating the new islands).   Cost savings enabled the creation of further islands for the client.

The challenges in the delivery of this project were recognised in the ICE Award won by the project, which was praised primarily for the sensitivity it demonstrated in its approach to working in Hampshire's largest fresh water lake and SSSI site but also its community engagement in the scheme.
